EDIT 891-2: Design Research Independent Study: Planning Supports for Neurodiverse Learners in Digital Learning Environments
Dr. Dawn Hathaway
This independent study will focus on neurodivergence-centered planning supports in graduate learning contexts. Provides an introduction to systematic cycles of design-based research in education. Explores cycles of research within design, development and implementation of educational and training interventions applicable to all content domains.
Focal App
Focal is a web-based academic planner prototype designed for adult college students with ADHD and autistic traits.
Many planning tools record what is due and stop there. Focal supports the work that surrounds a due date: deciding what to do first, getting started, staying on track, and looking back on what happened.
-
Each session opens with a brief check-in about the student's energy and mental load, and the planner adjusts what it shows in response.
-
On a low-capacity day, the planner shows fewer options and a calmer screen.
-
An AI assistant is available when the student asks for it and stays out of the way otherwise.
Within this DBR design, Focal is the intervention under study to potentially be revised across repeated cycles of design, testing, and feedback from neurodivergent learners.
